Types of Moldings for Kitchen Cabinets

Crown Molding

Crown molding is utilized for the final touch on the upper sections of both tall and wall cabinets. All cabinet door styles from Blue Ribbon Millwork follow a Full Overlay design, signifying that the doors extend beyond the front frame of the cabinet box, leaving only a minimal portion visible. As the visible edge can differ based on the specific cabinet line you opt for, cabinets with narrower edges might necessitate the installation of Crown Molding on the top of the cabinet frame instead of the front, securely fastened with backing support. Crown molding comes in various styles and sizes to suit different design preferences and ceiling heights.

Riser Molding

Crown Molding serves to complete the upper edges of both tall and wall cabinets. Light Rail Molding

Light Rail Molding finds its purpose in completing the lower edge of wall cabinets. It has the dual role of acting as a trim to hide under-cabinet lighting fixtures and offer a shield against the glare of the light, or purely adding a decorative touch. Various styles and sizes of Light Rail Moldings are on offer to cater to diverse design preferences. When opting for a Light Rail Molding, consider the height of the molding to ensure that the available space after installation can accommodate any countertop appliances.

Base Molding

Base Molding has the primary role of adding a decorative touch along the floor level of base cabinets. It is affixed with the profiled edge facing upward, thereby enhancing the lower part of islands and peninsulas covered with panel skins, lending them a more akin feel to furniture. By fitting the molding to the lower portion of cabinet sides towards the toe recess, a seamless and continuous appearance is achieved. Additionally, Base Molding can be employed in the opposite direction (with the profiled edge facing downward) in elevated areas where a broad decorative molding is desired. Fillers

Fillers are primarily employed to occupy any gaps or remaining spaces in a series of cabinetry by custom-cutting them to fit the required dimensions. They are often used vertically to create extra room between a cabinet and a wall, preventing doors from binding against the wall's surface or ensuring that fully extended drawers don't collide with nearby obstructions. Fillers can also be used horizontally as crown, light rail, or valance molding. Additionally, they can serve as a means to introduce more height and depth, acting as a riser molding (Refer to the 'Starter/Riser Molding' section below). Fillers are offered in widths of 3” and 6” in various lengths, ensuring minimal wastage while effectively catering to their specific purpose.

Toe Kick Molding

The intent of a toe kick area is to establish a sunken space for your feet, enabling you to stand in closer proximity to the countertop or work area with enhanced comfort. The toe kick support affixed to the cabinet is typically crafted from untreated material. Following installation, a polished Toe Kick Molding is affixed to envelop the entire span of raw toe space. Toe Kick Molding constitutes a 96” extended strip of refined casing, which is tailored and positioned within the recess to confer an uninterrupted, finalized appearance to the cabinetry.

Scribe Molding

Scribe Molding constitutes a slender, refined strip utilized to conceal any sections that might display irregular gaps or rough perimeters following the completion of installation. It possesses a modest degree of flexibility, enabling it to conform to subtle bends along walls, floors, or ceilings. Its common application is in spots where the straight lines of cabinetry intersect visibly with a surface that is slightly curved or uneven. It is accessible in lengths of 96” and necessitates on-site cutting to conceal apparent gaps or seams along walls, floors, and ceilings that span up to ½” in width. It is also employed to cap the trimmed, untreated edge of a Toe Kick Molding or any other unrefined perimeter of material extending up to ¾” in width.

Corner Molding

Corner molding serves the purpose of concealing an incomplete border or a space that emerges when two panels or materials converge at a 90-degree angle. The employment of Outside Corner Molding is to enclose the untreated edge of visible material along an outer corner. Meanwhile, Inside Corner Molding is put to use for masking any voids that arise when two material pieces meet at an inner corner. The utilization of these moldings should be paired with any design necessitating completed paneling at the rear of a cabinet, like in the case of an island or peninsula.

End Panels

End Panels are constructed from 3/4" MDF or 5/8" Melamine and possess a matching finish on one side. They come in various dimensions, aiming to offer diverse finishing solutions to cater to distinct requirements. For certain cabinet lines featuring unfinished sides, the application of a End Panel is necessary for all visible cabinet sides post-installation. These particular End Panels are obtainable in predetermined sizes, tailored to fit the cabinet's side behind the frame edge without necessitating any cuts in the field. Larger Oversized End Panels, often employed to finalize the rear of an island or envelop a set of cabinetry, need to be cut in the field to achieve the desired dimensions. If a Refrigerator End Panel Return is installed adjacent to a countertop's flat edge, it's advisable to affix a Tall End Panel to the exposed side to ensure a seamless, continuous surface along the countertop's straight edge.
